The HOTEL NIKKO MEXICO was constructed as a joint venture between a consortium of 52 Japanese companies, led by Japan Air Lines, and the Mexican government. The Hotel was one of the largest building projects underway in Mexico during 1985-88. The HOTEL NIKKO MEXICO is the first major five-star Gran Tourism hotel opened in Mexico City since 1975.

TRANSTEK joined the design team for the HOTEL NIKKO MEXICO after the basic structural and architectural plans were approved by the owners. TRANSTEK was the only U.S. company significantly involved in the project. The company's design and engineering staff collaborated with the operators and the principal architects in Japan, and with the interior designers, contractors, and construction management companies in Mexico.

TRANSTEK provided complete design, equipment, and installation management services for the following systems throughout the project:

  • Architectural lighting for all interior public spaces
  • Lighting control and dimming systems
  • Exterior and facade lighting
  • Theatrical and performance lighting and audio systems
  • Entertainment lighting and special effects system
  • Nine language simultaneous translation system
  • Teleconferencing system preparations
  • Video announcement and directory system

TRANSTEK's U.S. design and engineering staff developed the initial project designs. Transtek's local Mexico office provided installation services and coordinated TRANSTEK's international field engineering team.

TRANSTEK developed a number of proprietary systems for NIKKO operations, including multifunction presettable lighting controls, a programmable announcement and background music console, and an innovative performance lighting system for the Convention Center
